This past fall I accompanied Joel Kurz, a friend and Pastor of The Garden Community to a protest at the Parks and Recreation dept. What were we protesting? The decision by the city to cut funding thereby closing 55 rec centers (talk about investing in your youth!). So many people showed up to support this, eventually causing the city to postpone its plans, at least for a time.
This friday, 6pm, be there if you’re in Baltimore!

We were brought together to create an artist curated space. To allow photographers and videographers the means to show and discuss their work with the public and peers, to allow the photo community a means to engage in meaningful dialogue surrounding the themes and issues of contemporary work. We’ll establish a photographic forum that will explore what the photograph has to potential to be, as an object, an idea and a tool for communication. We will open the city’s sometimes insular art community to the diverse work of national and international photographers and videographers and create a viable discussion in Baltimore about the future of modern photography and videography. We will establish diverse programming and exhibition opportunities for community participants and artists to engage in, with dialogue that is based in and around inherent contemporary issues and motifs within the photographic medium. In spanning multiple traditions (fine art, advertising, documentary practices, etc.) photography today reflects a significant cultural zeitgeist. This pulse must be explored and examined through diverse programming, writing and exhibition opportunities. Through our artist curated shows, we will educate the public about ongoing issues in the world of photography as a whole - from photography as a social/political tool (for good and for ill), photojournalism, personal photography, fine art and other areas. Our ultimate goal is to establish a permanent gallery dedicated to Contemporary Photography
Just wanted to remind everyone about the Free Market being held tmw. The Garden Community and the The Baltimore Free Store are teaming up to provide this great event for the community so come on out! Its a great way to get rid of useful things you have but don’t need. Especially good for you MICA students!
